Meet Laura Johnson
Major: Bioengineering
Goal: Master’s in engineering; bioengineering/biotechnology research
Interacting closely with her professors, who took a personal interest in her success, is the thing Laura values most about her experience at Washington State University.
In her junior year, Laura’s professors helped her get an internship at Battelle’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL). There she researched efficient ways to test for pathogens like e. coli in large-volume fluidic systems, a line of work that could eventually lead to better ways to protect drinking water supplies from contamination.
Based on her performance as an intern, PNNL offered her a job—and will also pay for her graduate degree.
Meanwhile, she is using her engineering expertise in the University’s annual business plan competition. Her team won first place at WSU—and is now one of only nine from across the nation competing for national recognition and a chance to attract $2.6 million to develop their product, a system for monitoring airborne pathogens on airplanes.

“I think the interaction with the professors has been the most beneficial thing for me so far. They wrote great recommendations, and they encouraged me to go to graduate school.”
